If your vehicle’s shoes are soiled with gear oil, they can no longer clean themselves effectively, so replacement is recommended. Webb19 mars 2024 · Recently moved my 73 EB from so cal to Boise, ID. My axle seals at the pumpkins appear to have dried up in the cold weather this winter as I now have leaks at both. So will be changing both, any recommendations on gear oil, it’s a weekend driver and sees dirt but not a crawler.

Webb4 maj 2024 · The same oil goes through the hydraulic system and also lubricates the differential gears. Usual fill for these is a multigrade synthetic oil, something with a pretty high top number, say 15w50 or so. Transmission is not real hard to get apart, big o-ring seal if I remember right. They put new seal in and ill run truck for a week and ill get that burnt gear smell from passanger rear tire and its the gear fluid leaking on my disk break ( hence i no its leaking again.

It essentially forces the leak outside. It has no sealing capability for the gear oil and the retainer, on its own, will not pull the o-ring into the axle housing.
