WebbThe idea behind Cooperalls was to make the equipment on the legs lighter in order to allow the players to skate faster. It worked, but players also slid all over the ice when upended, which made them more of a safety hazard than a revolutionary piece of equipment, and the league didn't want players getting hurt because of them. WebbThat's why on this site, helmets start appearing with the uniform sets with the 1979-80 season. The NHL first tried to create a lighter uniform system in 1981 with the invention of Cooperalls -- which used long pants in place of the traditional short pants. The Flyers were the first team to go to the new style, followed by the Hartford Whalers.
